What Does It Mean When a Breaker Keeps Tripping?
When a breaker keeps tripping in a New Hampshire home it has done its job, which is the part most people have backwards. A breaker is a deliberate weak point, sized to give up before the wire behind it gets hot enough to matter, and it is the cheapest and most replaceable thing on the circuit for exactly that reason.
So a tripping breaker is not a fault in itself. It is a report. Something asked the circuit for more than the wire can carry, or current found a path it should not have taken, and the breaker interrupted it. The useful question is never "how do I stop it tripping". It is "what is it telling me", because those have very different answers and only one of them is safe.
This is also why putting in a bigger breaker is the single most dangerous thing a homeowner can do at a panel. It does not fix anything. It raises the point at which the protection gives up, above the point at which the wire starts to overheat, and it converts a visible nuisance into an invisible fire risk inside a wall. A 20 amp breaker on wire rated for 15 amps means the wire can now run hot indefinitely and nothing will ever notice.
If a circuit genuinely cannot carry what you need it to, the answer is another circuit, not a bigger breaker on the same wire.
The pattern is the same whether the house is in Manchester, Nashua, Concord, Derry, Salem, Bedford, Henniker, Laconia or Keene, because it is the circuit that decides it rather than the address.
Why Does a Breaker Trip When Several Things Are on at Once?
That pattern is an overload, and it is the most common cause we see by a distance. It is also the one that is usually not a fault at all. The circuit is doing exactly what it was designed to do; there is simply more plugged into it than it was ever built for.
Overloads behave in a recognizable way. The trip is slow rather than instant, often a minute or two after the last thing was switched on, because the breaker is responding to heat building up rather than to a sudden surge. It happens in the same room, usually a kitchen, a bathroom or wherever the space heaters end up in January. It stops happening when you unplug something.
The fix is frequently free. Move the heaviest thing to a circuit in a different room, not just a different outlet in the same one, since several outlets along a wall are usually the same circuit. A kettle, a microwave and a space heater together will overwhelm a 15 amp circuit no matter how good the wiring is. It peaks in January, and it peaks hardest in the older stock around Manchester, Concord and Keene where kitchens were given two circuits and have since acquired eight appliances.
Where the load genuinely cannot be moved, which is common in older kitchens and in workshops, the answer is an added circuit run properly from the panel. Much of New Hampshire's housing stock was wired when a kitchen meant a refrigerator and a toaster, and no amount of careful use changes the number of circuits a 1960s ranch was given.
Why Does a Breaker Trip With Nothing Plugged In?
That is a different animal, and it moves the problem from how the circuit is used to the circuit itself. A breaker that trips with nothing drawing power, or that trips the instant it is reset, is reporting a fault rather than a load.
The usual causes are a short circuit somewhere in the fixed wiring, a damaged cable inside a wall or ceiling, a failed device such as a switch or an outlet, water reaching something it should not, or rodent damage, which is more common in New Hampshire attics and crawlspaces than people expect. Rural properties around Weare, Deering, New Boston and Hillsborough see more of the last of those than houses in town. Occasionally the breaker itself has failed, and that does happen, but it is well down the list rather than the first assumption.
What matters here is what you do next. Resetting it repeatedly is not neutral. Each reset puts the fault back under power, and if there is arcing at a damaged conductor then each attempt is another opportunity for it to find something flammable. Once is reasonable to see whether it was a one-off. Repeatedly is turning off the smoke alarm rather than looking for the fire.
Leave it off and get it found. Fault-finding on a circuit is a methodical job of isolating, splitting and testing, and it is what troubleshooting and fault finding actually means as a service. It is rarely the dramatic part. It is the part that takes the time.
Why Does a GFCI Outlet Keep Tripping?
A GFCI is not watching for overload at all, which is the source of most of the confusion about them. It is watching for current going somewhere it should not, comparing what goes out against what comes back, and it trips on a difference of a few thousandths of an amp. That is a hundred times more sensitive than anything a normal breaker responds to, and deliberately so, because that level of leakage is what kills people.
So a bigger circuit will not help and a bigger breaker is irrelevant. What causes it is moisture in an outdoor or garage outlet, a failing heating element in an appliance, a long circuit with many outlets where small leakages add up, or a genuine fault in the fixed wiring.
The diagnosis is elimination and you can do most of it yourself. Unplug everything on the circuit, reset, then add things back one at a time and wait. Kettles, coffee machines, outdoor tools, pressure washers, older freezers and anything with a heating element are the usual suspects, because a heater element that has absorbed moisture leaks to ground long before it stops working.
If it trips with nothing plugged in at all, the wiring is the problem rather than the appliances, and that needs finding. Outdoor and garage circuits in particular are worth checking after winter, since ice and meltwater get into boxes that were sealed well enough in October. GFCI and AFCI protection is part of bringing older circuits up to current standards, and on most houses built before the 1990s there is less of it than there should be.
Why Does an AFCI Breaker Trip so Easily?
An AFCI is listening for the electrical signature of arcing, which is what a damaged cable, a loose terminal or a failing connection does before it sets fire to something. They are required on most living-space circuits in new work, and they are more sensitive than a standard breaker on purpose.
They do have a reputation for nuisance tripping and it is partly earned. Older appliances with brushed motors, some vacuum cleaners, certain power tools and a few types of dimmer produce a signature close enough to an arc that early AFCI designs could not tell the difference. Modern ones are considerably better at it, but the reputation persists.
The right instinct is still to take it seriously first and dismiss it second. Eliminate the appliances one at a time the same way you would with a GFCI. If it keeps tripping with nothing plugged in, the thing it is listening for may genuinely be there, and an arc inside a wall is precisely the failure that AFCIs exist to catch.
This is worth more attention in older houses than newer ones. Cloth-covered wiring that has gone brittle, terminations that were never tight, and decades of small alterations by whoever was handy all produce exactly the conditions an AFCI is designed to notice.
Which Appliances Most Often Cause a Breaker to Keep Tripping?
In our experience the order is fairly consistent. Anything with a heating element comes first, because heating elements fail by degrading rather than by stopping, and a degraded element draws more and leaks more before it finally gives up. Kettles, coffee machines, toasters, space heaters, hair dryers, older dishwashers and clothes dryers all sit in this group.
Motors come next. Refrigerators, freezers, well pumps, sump pumps, garbage disposals and power tools all draw far more starting than running, and a motor with worn bearings or a failing start capacitor draws more still. A well pump that has started to struggle will trip a breaker long before anyone notices the water pressure is down, which in a house on a private well is a useful early warning rather than a nuisance.
Then the things that are not really appliances: extension leads with more on them than they should carry, older power strips, and the daisy-chained arrangements that appear in home offices and workshops.
The test is always the same and it costs nothing. Plug the suspect into a different circuit in a different room. If it trips there too, it is the appliance. If it does not, the circuit is worth looking at. Dedicated circuits for appliances like hot tubs, well pumps and workshop equipment exist precisely because these loads do not belong sharing with anything else.
When Is a Tripping Breaker an Emergency in a New Hampshire Home?
Some symptoms take this out of the realm of diagnosis entirely, and they override every other consideration on the page. A burning or hot-plastic smell anywhere. Scorch marks or discoloration on an outlet, a switch plate or the panel. Anything warm to the touch that should not be. Buzzing, crackling or a visible spark. A breaker that will not reset at all. Water near any of it. Anybody feeling a shock or a tingle from an appliance or a faucet.
None of those is a tripping problem. They are heat or arcing problems, and the tripping is incidental. Switch the circuit off at the panel, leave it off, and call somebody. Do not reset it to see what happens.
The reason for the hard line is that the failure mode is not gradual once you are at that stage. A termination that has been slowly degrading for years reaches a point where it starts to degrade quickly, and the window between the first smell and a real problem can be short. Emergency electrical work is answered around the clock for exactly this, and the honest answer on the phone is sometimes that you should be calling whoever is nearest rather than waiting for us.
Everything else on the list, the overloads and the nuisance trips and the appliance faults, can wait for a booked appointment. These cannot, and it is worth knowing the difference before you need it.
How Do You Stop a Breaker From Tripping for Good?
By finding out which of the four things is happening, which is most of the work. An overload is a usage problem with a free fix or a new circuit. A short circuit is a fault that needs locating. A ground fault is leakage that is usually one appliance and occasionally the wiring. An arc fault is the one worth taking most seriously. They present similarly and they are resolved completely differently.

Yes, though it is further down the list than people assume. Breakers are mechanical devices and they do wear, particularly ones that have tripped many times. A breaker that trips well below its rating with a known-good load on it is a candidate, but the circuit gets ruled out first.
Why Does the Breaker Trip but Nothing Seems Wrong?
Because the causes that are invisible from the room are the ones that matter. A damaged cable inside a wall, a loose terminal in a box, water in an outdoor outlet or rodent damage in an attic all trip breakers without producing anything you can see. That is what fault finding is for.
