How Lighting Gets Designed for a New Hampshire Home

Layered Lighting: Ambient, Task and Accent

A room needs three things from its lighting and most rooms have exactly one of them, which is a single fixture in the middle of the ceiling.

Ambient light fills the space and sets the general level. Task light puts usable light where something actually happens, which is a counter, a desk, a reading chair or a mirror. Accent light picks out what is worth looking at.

The single-fixture room fills adequately and does nothing else, which is why people describe rooms as feeling flat without being able to say why. It also puts the person working in their own shadow at every counter, which no amount of extra brightness fixes.

Recessed Lighting Layout, and Why Fewer Is Usually Better

Fewer than most plans call for, and where they go matters far more than how many there are.

A ceiling covered in evenly spaced downlights is the most common over-specification in residential lighting, and it produces a room that is bright, shadowless and faintly unpleasant. The useful approach places fixtures against what is below them rather than on a grid.

Lights near the walls wash the vertical surfaces, which is what actually makes a room feel larger and brighter. Lights over a work surface, a reading position or a seating area give task light where it is needed. Lights in the middle of an empty floor mostly light the floor.

Beam angle and trim do as much as count. A narrow beam accents and a wide beam fills, so the same number of fixtures produces very different rooms. A deep-set trim with a dark baffle disappears into the ceiling; a shallow one with a shiny reflector becomes the brightest thing in view.

Kitchen and Under-Cabinet Lighting

Layers on separate circuits and separate controls, decided before the cabinets are designed rather than after.

Under-cabinet lighting onto the counter is the one that matters most day to day, because a ceiling fixture behind you puts your shadow exactly where you are working. Pendants over an island do the same job where there are no wall cabinets. General ceiling lighting fills the room, and accent lighting in or above glass cabinets is where a kitchen starts to look considered rather than merely lit.

The practical constraint is that under-cabinet lighting needs a chase and a switch loop planned at rough-in, and recessed layout depends on where the wall cabinets land. Deciding lighting after the cabinet drawings are signed off is how kitchens end up with one fixture and a plug-in strip under a cupboard.

Exterior, Security and Landscape Lighting in New Hampshire

Whatever survives the winter and does the job it was installed for, and those two rule out a surprising amount of what is sold.

Exterior lighting does three separate jobs and they conflict. Security lighting wants to be bright and triggered. Approach lighting wants to be gentle and continuous, so people can see a path and a step. Accent lighting wants to be aimed at the house rather than at the viewer. Trying to do all three with one set of very bright floodlights is the usual compromise and it satisfies none of them, as well as annoying the neighbors.

The New Hampshire specifics matter. Fixtures and boxes have to be rated and installed for wet locations properly, because ice and meltwater find any gap. Anything on a north wall or under an eave sees months of freeze and thaw. Ground-mounted fixtures need to survive a plow and a snowbank, which decides where they can sensibly go.

Motion sensing on a long driveway is worth more than raw brightness, particularly on the rural properties around Weare, Deering, Henniker and Hillsborough where the drive is the dark part rather than the yard. A buried circuit out to a yard or an outbuilding is a new circuit rather than a fixture swap.

LED Retrofits for a Whole House

For most houses yes, and the argument has shifted over the past decade from cost to quality.

The energy saving is real but modest in a house. An LED uses roughly a fifth to a sixth of what an incandescent used for the same light, lasts many times longer and produces far less heat, which in a recessed fixture matters for the insulation around it as well as for the room in summer.

What is worth attention is quality rather than brand. Color rendering affects how everything in the room looks, and a poor LED makes food, skin and paint colors look wrong in ways people notice without being able to diagnose. Color temperature should be chosen deliberately and kept consistent within a room and ideally across a floor, since mixed temperatures read as a mistake.

Dimming performance varies enormously and is where cheap LEDs disappoint most visibly. The fixture and the dimmer have to be specified together.

Dimmers and Smart Switches Matched to the Fixtures

Almost always a mismatch between the dimmer and the LED driver, and it is the most common complaint we are called out to after a lighting job somebody else did.

Not every dimmer works with every LED fixture. The symptoms are flickering, buzzing, a narrow dimming range, lights that will not go low without dropping out, or a set of fixtures that do not dim together. None of it is a fault in the wiring.

The fix is specifying the dimmer for the load and the driver type rather than picking one off a shelf, and doing that at design rather than discovering it afterwards. Where fixtures are already in, it usually means changing the dimmer rather than the lights.

The other common cause in older houses is the absence of a neutral at the switch box, which constrains which controls can be used at all. That is worth establishing before choosing dimmers and smart switches rather than after.

Adding Recessed Lighting to a Finished Ceiling

Usually, and this is what decides whether adding lighting to an existing room is a small job or a large one.

Remodel-rated fixtures are designed to be installed from below through a hole cut in the finished ceiling, clipping to the drywall rather than mounting to the joists. What makes it work is access above: a room with an accessible attic over it is the easy case, and a room with a floor above is harder but often still possible where cable can be fished between the joists.

What forces opening is predictable. No access above, fire blocking in the cavity, ductwork or plumbing in the way, or a plaster and lath ceiling that will not cooperate. Plaster is the usual complication in the older stock around Manchester, Concord and Keene, since it cracks rather than cutting cleanly and it is heavy.

Switching is the other half of the question. A new switch position needs a route to it, and in older wiring there is frequently no neutral at the switch box.

Lighting a Room That Has No Ceiling Fixture

More older New Hampshire houses have this than people expect, particularly living rooms and bedrooms in pre-war stock where the original design assumed lamps and the room was never given a ceiling outlet.

The straightforward answer is a switched outlet, where one half of a receptacle is controlled from a wall switch so a floor or table lamp comes on with it. In many houses one already exists and nobody has worked out which switch it belongs to.

Adding a ceiling fixture is entirely possible and is a question of running a cable and setting a box, with the same access considerations as recessed lighting. In a room below an attic it is usually modest work; under a finished floor it is more involved.

There are also approaches needing no ceiling work at all. Wall sconces suit older houses and are easier to route to than a ceiling center. Picture and shelf lighting accents rather than fills. In a room with good daylight and a reading corner, layered lamps on switched outlets can beat a ceiling fixture that gets dimmed to nothing every evening anyway, and a room that has become a home office is usually better served by a dedicated circuit than by more light.
